Boost your Child's Academic Potential with One on One Tutoring

Over thirty years of educational research has shown that there are many benefits of one on one tutoring. In 1982 Cohen, Kulik, and Kulik found in an analysis of 52 tutored students that they academically outperformed their non-tutored classmates and had better attitudes of learning and improved classroom behavior. These results have been duplicated in other research studies providing anecdotal and empirical evidence to the benefits of one on one tutoring.

Huntington Learning Centers are proud to offer a variety of tutoring programs including targeted one on one tutoring. These tutoring sessions are designed based on a student's specific needs and assessment data. The sessions are structured, performance based, and closely monitored for ongoing needs and student successes. During our carefully crafted tutoring sessions you'll discover the many benefits of individual tutoring, including:

  1. Sessions are data driven One on one tutoring sessions should start with an initial consultation and intake assessments. This data will provide the tutor the information necessary to construct specific tutoring goals for your child. No more guessing! One on one tutoring responds directly to the needs your child is exhibiting. As the sessions continue the tutor will monitor ongoing progress and adapt as necessary. If certain concepts remain difficult for your child new opportunities will be created for additional learning. When your child advances quicker than expected the tutor can use this data to re-evaluate the original goals.
  2. A focus on individualization Your child is unlike anyone else and the tutoring sessions should be just as individualized. Strengths and areas of weakness are evaluated to determine the best methods of instruction and practice. Since your child is the only student in these sessions the tutor only has to account for one learning style or preferred instructional method. Huntington Learning Centers are fully committed to the individualized nature of our tutoring sessions. You'll quickly discover that your child's sessions are unlike any others. We address the specific student needs through scheduling, content, sequence of skill acquisition, and ongoing adjustment of tutoring      sessions. You can be confident that each time your child participates in a one one one tutoring session that it has been specifically individualized and carefully created.
  3. Based on student interest What does your child love most? Science, animals, sports? In one on one tutoring the tutor can carefully weave a child's interests into the individualized sessions. If the tutoring sessions are focused on reading and writing the tutor may choose to utilize passages based on your child's interests. A leveled reading passage on astronomy will be more      interesting to a child who loves space than just a general information passage. Awareness of these interests also allows tutors to connect individually with the student. Children respond best when they feel valued, someone is listening, and their interests are honored.
  4. Connected to curriculum As a parent you ultimately want your child's tutoring to impact school or testing performance. This is possible when the tutoring sessions are connected to school curriculum and state and national standards. One on one tutoring has the ability to match not only the student's exact needs but the work requirement in the classroom. A tutor will match academic needs or gaps in understanding with classroom and assessment expectations.
  5. Improved performance and less academic anxiety Students with increased confidence in their academic abilities are likely to exhibit less academic anxiety. They may also display more confidence as their performance improves. These one on one tutoring sessions work to boost confidence, improve academic performance, and impact the overall achievement of a student.
